Effect of exposure to petroleum hydrocarbons upon cardio-respiratory function in the common sole (Solea solea) ArchiMer
Claireaux, Guy; Davoodi, Fariba.
The long term consequences of oil exposure upon marine populations are still poorly evaluated. One particular missing piece of information relates to the link between oil exposure, individuals' ability to face environmental contingencies and populations' production and dynamics. In that context, the present paper investigates the impact of oil exposure upon fish cardio-respiratory performance, this performance being viewed as a key determinant of individual fitness. Experimental conditions replicated the contamination conditions observed during the weeks that immediately followed the Erika oil spill (west coast of France; December 1999). Sole (Solea solea), were exposed to number-2 oil for 5 days and were then challenged with an acute rise in temperature...

Ocean warming combined with lower omega-3 nutritional availability impairs the cardio-respiratory function of a marine fish ArchiMer

Highly unsaturated fatty acids of the omega-3 series (HUFA) are major constituents of cell membranes, yet poorly synthesised de novo by consumers. Their production, mainly supported by aquatic microalgae, has been decreasing with global change. Understanding the consequences of such reductions is essential for ectotherm consumers, since temperature tightly regulates the HUFA content in cell membranes, maintaining their functionality. Integrating individual, tissue and molecular approaches, we examined the consequences of the combined effects of temperature and HUFA depletion on the key cardio-respiratory functions of the golden grey mullet, an ectotherm grazer of high ecological importance. For four months, fish were exposed to two contrasting HUFA diets...

Parental trophic exposure to three aromatic fractions of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the zebrafish: Consequences for the offspring ArchiMer
Perrichon, Prescilla; Akcha, Farida; Le Menach, Karyn; Goubeau, Manon; Budzinski, Helene; Cousin, Xavier; Bustamante, Paco.
In recent decades, PAH emissions due to extensive anthropogenic activities have risen sharply causing considerable pollution of aquatic ecosystems. This pollution represents a threat for organisms, among them are fish. Consequently, prenatal stress can have important repercussions, and may impact survival and population recruitment. To investigate this point, eggs were collected from zebrafish exposed during 6 months by trophic route to three aromatic fractions from two different origins, pyrolytic (PY) and petrogenic (light (BAL) and heavy (HFO) fractions) sources. Chronic dietary exposure of the parents was performed at environmentally relevant concentrations (0.3 ×, 1 × and 3 ×; 1 × represents an environmental concentration measured in French estuary)....
